Retirement
Retirement is permanent: a retired player leaves the squad for good. It is only ever triggered by a player getting older.
One last season
An announced retirement is not over yet: the player sees out one more full season, and you can keep picking and training him throughout it.
The older a player gets…
From 33 onward, every birthday carries a chance of retirement that grows with age. A 33 year old almost always plays on, but by the late thirties most players decide to stop.
The R badge
An announced retirement shows an orange R badge in the Players table (after the injury badge, if both apply) and changes nothing else: the player can still be picked and trained through their final season.
Leaving the club
When that final season ends, the player leaves entirely and their spot in your saved lineup is covered by a stand-in. New players come in through the U18 academy.
